    A heavy worsted fabric in plain weave, also with narrow colour stripes, made in Yorkshire about 1850 to 1890. Single yams were used and the cloth lustre finished. Used for women's wear, and the striped cloth for chair seats, instead of the camel-hair cloth then in use.

    A fine, thin, plain-weave cloth, woven from camlet yarns, 30-in., 60 yards, usually dyed bright red. Camlet yarn is spun from lustrous wool, Lincoln or Leicester. The Dutch introduced the cloth, but they used camel hair or goat hair. Other qualities are made from hard twisted worsted yarns about 36 X 40 per inch, 2/30's 2/34's. In the 17th century a camlet of wool and silk was used for making gowns. It is mentioned in Pepys Diary, in 1664: " I put on my camelott suit, the best I ever wore in my life." In the latter part of the 17th century camelots of various colours were highly esteemed. First made in Montgomeryshire on the banks of the river Camlet. The true camlet is made in India of camel hair (see Patu Khudrang)

  • 13 Hairs

    A number of hairs are used in the textile trade for fabric production. The principal kinds are alpaca, mohair, cashmere and vicuna. They are largely used in the woollen industry for dress, suiting and shawl manufacture (see under each name). Other hairs used in limited quantities are camel hair, used in the woollen industry; cow hair, used for carpets, rugs and blankets; rabbit hair, used for hats; horse hair, used for upholstery and linings; kangaroo, used for sacking and coarse cloth. Hairs are usually straight, non-elastic and glossy. They are stronger, smoother and usually coarser than wools and lack felting properties.

  • 14 Kasha

    A worsted dress cloth, 2 & 2 twill weave, low ends and picks, soft and woolly handle, piece-dyed. It is a trade name and claimed to be the finest wool cloth made. Originated by Paul Rodier, a French manufacturer and made from camel hair in 54-in. Today the yarns are a special blend of cashmere and merino wools. The fabric is a vicuna with a kasha finish and is registered under this name.

  • 16 Aba

    A coarse, thick woollen cloth, heavily felted, used for peasants' clothing. Made plain weave and at times in dark coloured stripes. It was originally made in Hungary from the natural colour yams. Now known in Bulgaria, Turkey, Arabia and Northern Africa. Frequently camel hair and goat hair is used for weft, Atsp a loose cloak worn by Arabs - more commonly called "bournous". A variety made in Italy on hand'looms, has a small percentage of cotton in the yarns.
